Depth oh field

Depth of field (DOF) indicates distance range in which photography has sharp focus. With high DOF most objects in scene are sharp, and with low DOF we get the opposite, respectively that the small part of photography is in focus.

Photography with little DOF

DOF is directly associated with aperture (F), that is, as the aperture is bigger the scene has lower DOF and vice versa. Low DOF is good for portrait and macro photography where we want to isolate one object, and we use high DOF for landscape and architecture photography where it is in our interest that the whole photography is sharp.
